To take the initiative as distinguished professional leaders

Takao Takahashi

Fields involving pediatric neurology are broad and deep. Our projects, mainly issues of growth and development, continuously develop along the time axis, beginning from ontogeny through to the embryonic and fetal periods to prematurity and neonatal care, adolescent medicine, and care for the transitional period. Furthermore, the projects also have very large fields“extending horizontally.” There are many aspects of interaction with clinical medicine, such as rehabilitation, neurosurgery, and neurology, and with basic medical fields such as neuropathology and neurobiology. Furthermore, there are also many fields of activity from the sociomedical aspects, including cooperation with medical administration.

Thus, pediatric neurology is strongly and closely involved in almost all fields concerning pediatrics and pediatric care. Although pediatric neurology is one of the subspecialty fields of pediatrics, we could say that pediatric neurology is the essence of pediatrics from the standpoint of being so comprehensive.

With our fields of activity being such wide-ranging as mentioned above, we engage in many missions at the same time. For example, we have a mission to propose many guidelines and clinical studies while keeping in mind the sociomedical viewpoint and considering the aspect of medical ethics. We are obliged to play a role in promoting translational research for utilizing the results of basic research on development, differentiation, etc., or clinical genetics in clinical practice. Our presence as an academic society is expected to expand further into many areas not limited to clinical settings.

Specialty fields of all academic societies have to continue to be selected by young physicians. For this purpose, first, it is urgently necessary to improve the environment for fostering specialists as well as the board system itself. In the near future, the medical specialty board systems in Japan will shift from the goal oriented to the curriculum emphasis-type, and this is expected to strongly influence career selection by young physicians. Our society is already respected in its establishment and management of the specialist system, at least in Japan. Pediatric neurology is one of the limited number of subspecialty fields in which its uniqueness in child health care is particularly recognized in the reform of the board systems in Japan. An excellent specialist system has been established, and it is necessary to steadily manage and develop it to the future.

It is also important to take the initiative as an academic society. I feel that we are required to strengthen cooperation with specialized scientific societies in related fields, particularly with general pediatrics, epilepsy, clinical genetics, congenital anomalies, neuroscience, etc., and to take further initiatives. In addition, as the world largest pediatric neurology society, we would like to aim at a further influential academic group also in the international society. For example, it is indispensable to steadily transmit excellent research results overseas for improving the status of our society in international scientific societies. Our society also has to play a central role in research fields for the true development of pediatric neurology in Japan. We would like to further develop our society as an academic society by developing pediatric neurology as a science.

We would like to join forces so that pediatric neurology continues to be a “specialty field most preferred by young physicians as a future career” so that we continue to take strong initiatives to lead related fields, and so that the proud tradition and excellent achievements of our society lead to a bright future.
